Storage is more than a gallery count
SmugMug advertises unlimited full-resolution JPEG storage, with RAW storage as a separate add-on. Folio uses storage allowances. Estimate the bytes you keep online, not just the number of galleries: a small set of large exports can consume more space than many web-sized images. Keep independent backups whichever platform you use; a delivery gallery should not be your only copy.

A storefront changes the buying decision
SmugMug’s Portfolio plan adds print and digital sales, while Pro adds tools such as multiple price lists and packages. If selling photographs is part of your business, evaluate those tools alongside presentation. Folio currently focuses on portfolios and gallery delivery. Moving a storefront to a service without checkout means finding another way to take and fulfill orders.

Test the way people find their photographs
For a large event library, navigation matters as much as the cover image. SmugMug describes event organization and bulk captioning and keywording tools for volume photography. Test how someone finds a particular shoot or photograph. For a smaller portfolio, test the opposite: can you edit the presentation down so a visitor sees the work you want them to remember? These are different jobs, and neither is inherently better.

Include taxes, separate website or business subscriptions, and any sales or fulfillment fees. What to test first
Use both a representative client shoot and a small portfolio selection. Browse them on a phone, try the download flow, and ask someone unfamiliar with your archive to find a particular image. If you sell, also check available print products, shipping destinations, and the margin left after fulfillment and fees.
If you’re thinking of switching
Inventory the size of your archive before moving anything. Make sure the destination plan can hold it, and keep a record of gallery URLs and outstanding orders. Move a small gallery first and check filenames, organization, and download quality. Leave old galleries accessible for the period you promised clients; replacing a website does not automatically redirect every shared photo link.
